Canvassing puts more votes in the ballot box than writing internet articles. So I have to commend those Medium writers who sacrificed some Medium time to get some votes for the Democrat Party. I believed your work should have found the result you were looking for.
Writing is fun. Canvassing is not fun. I have done a fair bit of political canvassing. Knocking on doors to have a little chat with people you don’t know; some are annoyed, some are hostile. I would never seek employment in this kind of field. Strange I did this as a volunteer.
In theory, canvassing is about identifying the soft support for a political party. Then the party campaign office will try to motivate these citizens to make the trip to the polls and cast a vote.
It’s kind of sad that many citizens have to be manipulated to vote. But this is the nature of western democracy. Whether we like it or not, the bulk of the population is not that interested in politics as the political players and political junkies. Why we need “ground teams” to “get out their vote,” and decide one political party over the other is a sign of a broken system.
From what I could gather from the 2024 US election, the blue ground team was much better than the red ground team. Despite the heroic efforts of thousands of blue team canvassers, 86 million Americans decided to sit this election out.
There are many theories why so many soft Democrat supporters stayed home on that day. Maybe some of these theories will be useful in the next election. But the game will likely be different the next time. In other words, any new theories are not likely to work. Instead the future political back-room managers will have to create new, real-time election strategies. Sometimes they make the right calls; sometimes not.
Just like coaches at the football games. But football games are not that important.
The election is over
I would like all canvassers to determine how much time they spent on the campaign, including time to travel from their home to the campaign office. Fifty hours? One hundred hours? And for what result?
Then compare that time to the 10 hours a month it will take to build a new democracy.
You willingly gave up some free time to canvass for the Democrat Party. You made adjustments to your schedule to canvass.
You can do the same for this new democracy. And it will bear much better results.
