I saw January 6, 2021 as a deliberate attempt to put the USA in a constitutional crisis, where the legal authority would be confusing. It only needed a few more dominos to fall to create this state of confusion.
As the investigations into 1/6 moved forward, it became apparent that 1/6 was more than an inept political leader rousing his supporters to “mess things up” to see what happens.
But we still didn’t want to believe that American democracy could degrade to that level.
Or maybe we did not want to believe that clowns could pull this insurrection off.
A Change in Tone?
Since October, I have been noticing a change in tone in anti-Trump Medium articles and Mastodon posts.
When Mr. Trump and his supporters doubled down on his 91 indictments, I believe that was the tipping point. Now, many more Americans realize that their great democracy is indeed . . . not forever. . . . . . and clowns can pull it off.
Even PBS NewsHour has moved away from trying to report the news objectively and toward warning Americans about the upcoming authoritarian rule (or maybe this is now objective reporting).
With more Americans coming to this realization, a different political dynamic is shaping up. An outcome different than the coin-flip elections of 2016 and 2020 is now possible for 2024.
The times are indeed a-changing. If only this new realization can entice enough Americans to become sensible, disciplined political players instead of spectators and complainers.
