I invented a new democracy, called “Tiered Democratic Governance (TDG).”
I could talk well into next week about the TDG. But here are some brief TDG points:
I tried to change the world by getting involved in Canadian politics. I was an active low-level volunteer in the back rooms of power. After six years, I concluded that western democracy was inherently dysfunctional. So I quit politics. But somehow, I invented the TDG, which addresses all the dysfunction I saw.
The TDG has no political parties or noisy election campaigns.
TDG electoral units are much smaller, about 200 residents each.
Neighbors vote one of their neighbors into the first tier. Neighbors cast their vote based on good character and capacity for governance.
By election from the lower tiers, the political leaders find their way into the higher tiers.
Annual elections create a good combination of the old guard and new blood. The elections also root out corruption much earlier, albeit with not much drama.
TDG decision-making bodies use consultation to reach decisions. Consultation allows participants to combine their knowledge, experience, and wisdom into one voice.
Consensus is encouraged. If not attained, a majority vote becomes the decision. All decisions will be reviewed; lessons will be learned; ineffective decisions will be replaced.
Building the TDG will be the practice sessions for us to learn the new ways of this new system. Please understand that the TDG is about a deliberate and conscious movement to create a new political culture.
Average people will be building this system. Not the political elite. Not the wealthy. Not the academics.
When this new system is built, we will better manage the many issues challenging our society. The TDG is the kinder, wiser democracy we so yearn for.
